I plan on buying some fish on Tuesday and want to know if I keep the fish in a qt tank for 3 days and they show no signs of illnesses can I put them in the main tank or would I have to wait longer?

NO

That depends how willing you are to risk the health of your other fish... Many don't use a qt tank at all, but if you are going to do it, might as well do it right and wait a week.

I would wait longer....

It's something you have to acquire. It took me a while before I was able to quarantine my fish for a week.

You need to quarantine them for at least 10 days. I learned the hard way. I bought a koi and added to my pond after 2 days. I got 2 different parasites that cost me over $200 to treat and still lost 60% of my fish.

Not worth it! Quarantine!

Personally, I do not quarantine my fish......But if you choose to, then yes, 3 to 7 days is the safest......

3-4 weeks should be the recommended time frame for quarantine. Lots of people do not have the patience for it however why risk it? There are several diseases that are prevalent lately and can nearly destroy all your stocks including flukes, external parasites and protozoans. Having to treat all your fish is quite troublesome and more costly than to just treat individuals. It's your choice though.
