Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask if 10g is good enough to breed convicts? I want my own set of feeders to ensure a healthy meal. If a 10g is good, should I just go to the lfs and just ask for a male and female? Or just buy a few a see if they pair? Any suggestions will help a lot.

i had a pair in a 10 gallon...just picked up a male and female at LFS, and viola... 2 weeks later I had fry. then a week later dad killed mom.

Wow, u must've been pissed. Are their other cichlids less aggressive but equally easy to breed ?

I wasn't happy...took dad and threw him in my oscar tank with 3 7" Oscars (he's about 1.5") thinking he'd be a snack...now he's the king of that tank and I have sulking oscars! FML. LOL

From what ive seen convicts are easy to breed and are one of the most common feeders to breed. If you want the male to leave the female alone with out any dividers I'd recommend something bigger

You may be able to breed them in a 10g, but your gonna need alot more tank to grow them out to a feedable size.

Why even do feeders unless you just have Ps for the sake of watching them rip up other fish?

Raising your own is healthier due to lack of disease, sure, but doesn't mean they're a good thing to feed them.

I got a pair in my pond outside which next month get the honors of taking them out. They had over a million fry with about 200 1inch I can see in their now.

I guess, you guys think investing time is worth it? I can add minnows or red rosies here and there but I do not know how clean they might be...I know petco tries to maintain the best water conditions.. But who knows?

Youre the only one that can decide if its worth it or not. The cost of maintaining a tank for convicts and raising fry to feeder size may not be worth financially, but at least you'll know if theyre ill or not. I'm not really a fan of feeders myself, but when I did use them I didnt have problems with minnows. Its when i started using feeder goldfish that the ich came in to my tank. Not saying minnows are perfectly safe, but I had good luck with them. Now I just use crickets and dried blood worms for protien. My back yard has a lot of crickets and since we dont use pesticides I'm not worried about them making my fish sick.
