I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but I was told that all fish, even fresh water should have a little salt in their tanks. I have a dragon goby which I was told is a brackish type fish in with my knife fish, and they all seem perfectly happy. But I am worried to hurt either of them. I have looked all around for answers and they all contradict one another. I am just hoping to find a solid answer, if one exists. any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

A little salt can be more then good and can even heal wounded fish. Much in the way salt water helps heal a cut on your hand. A brackish fish however needs more then a little and will need more then a freshwater fish will be healthy with.

:welcome: to MFK!

You do not need to add salt for freshwater fish however brackish ones need to be separated and from there, start adjusting the salinity level as appropriate. You use marine salt for this one, not aquarium salt (pure sodium chloride). Brackish water types are much happier if you adjust their salinity appropriately than in pure freshwater. Many brackish water fish don't last long as a result of people keeping them in FW environment thinking it is fine when it absolutely is not.

Ok thanks guys :) I will be sure to remove my Brackish into a new tank with the appropriate water conditions. I wish I would have known!! I thought I was adopting him from someone who knew a lot about his type of fish and the guy never mentioned Brackish! I will get on this right away. :)
