So I recently aquired a Marbled Motoro (10 inches across disk). I was a little hesitant to just drop it in my pond as the smallest ray in there is 12 inch and I just wanted to keep him under observation and make sure he's eating well. Woke up yesterday morning and started doing the rounds and what do I find? A dying Armatus. Armatus was about 6 inches. Eye missing. Great deal of scales missing. Looked like it had a few "hickey" type marks on it about an inch long. NO scratches and NO shank marks. I had 5 Armatus housed together in this 180 gallon tank. I have have only seen a ripped fin once and the Armatus seem to school together. I had this same exact thing happen with my shoal of Tats and came to the conclusion it was a Motoro. Would like some ray keepers input..... ARE these animals capable of taking down a fish at the sizes stated? I'm just having a hard time believing that the other Armatus are at fault. They are all in mint condition and still showing absolutly no signs of aggresion towards eachother even with just the moonlights on. I went ahead and moved the ray to the pond allready. If needed I'll get some pics of these "hickey" type marks pulled of my phone.....

I would guess its the ray, especially since theres no shank marks and the eye was most likely sucked out....

Sounds like a hungry ray.. Wheres the Motoro vs. Gar pix? Seen some rays chew up big Juruense cats, too..

You know....... I really don't know how much more of this crap I can take. All I ever wanted is Rays and Armatus. My first one gets offed by dats and now a ray I was worried about being healthy??? I think he proved that he's MORE than plenty healthy...... What's next my gang of Pictus cats killing off the rest of the Armatus shoal? Friggin ray took the 2nd best one of the bunch...... I've heard of expensive feeders but this is rediculous. Lost 4 fish this weekend from 4 different tanks. Combined age of them all= 22 years...... And the Armatus I only had for a few months. Was so frustrated I just straight up gave away all the fish in one tank.......

my 18" leo (im assuming) he is the biggest ray in the tank took a 6" bala shark down... anything is possible

Definately ray. Mine at 8" and 12" used to pin down a 10-12" Goliath tiger fish at night and leave ray love bites all up and down his body.

So even IF the fish is bigger than the ray there is still a risk....... Funny how they can all look so cute and innocent.

if the eyes were missing... it was the rays.

mine used to do it to vamp tetras all the time.

you will find that if the fish is smaller than the whole rays disk their is a chance it will get eaten

when a ray jumps on a fish and covers it it gets a vacuum the fish will be luck to get out of it

my 12inch disk rays are always trying to jump on 17inch aros but as they cant cover the whole fish its easy for the aro to shack them off

i have a 3inch NGT tiger in my tank and the rays jump on him all the time but once they feel the sharp dorsal fin all dats have they let him go

that said the rays did kill a thin bar last week so no fish is 100% safe in a ray tank

Thanks for the insight guys. Really feeling crappy about this. I should have learned after the Tat incident years ago.
