Is a savannah a good first and ONLY monitor?

Aslong as you have the money to buy the outrageous amount of bugs these guys need, go for it. Another "good" smaller monitor are Red and Yellow Ackies. They also eat bugs.

I go through about 2-3 thousand crickets a week on a good week not to mention the mealies, roaches, wax worms, silkworms, butterworms etc. A thousand more cant hurt.

Anything other than "bugs"

if you are prepared and have the resources they can be great
there are also many other options such as similis, acanthurus, and tristis

I like tristis because they get bigger then ackies yet are still similar to them
and they come from all over australia depending on what sub species you get so you can have a really nice enclosure

Personally, even when given proper husbandry, I find Savannahs to be quite boring. If you want something stimulating, with the same room requirements, go with an Argus or any of the Argus clan......

Ok I am clueless as to what an argus even is?

I just think baby savannahs are cute and have seen a couple bigs ones and I like their laid back kinda lazy attitude ( well the ones I have seen anyways)

they are not lazy or very nice and yes they are quite boring
ones most people see are overweight sick animals

I dont know how I forgot argus they are a lot more interesting IMO
If you want a friendly large lizard go with an argentine tegu as a lot of the time monitors are not all that friendly

If you are prepared to give them the space, bugs and heat they need I think they make very rewarding critters, yes they will spend a good amount of time just laying around. Dont use mice often, like once a week at most, better once every 2 weeks, Ive seen way to many sick savs because of a diet to rich in mice to say they are a good staple food item. Locusts, roaches, superworms, crickets, giant african land snails, crayfish, eartworms, etc, make for diverse diet that wont make your lizard to fat or jeopardize its kidneys and liver.

It's amazing that Savannah's eat mostly bugs considering the size they can reach...But then again, look at the aardvark.
