I saw some Uarus, around 4 inches for $13.00. Do you think that is a good price for those at that size? And is it like the poor man's discus? I like the look of discus but I heard that they are difficult to keep.

i dont think that U's are a poor mans discus, ive never kept discus' before. but the uaru i had was a great fish. very interactive. i think 13 bucks for a 4 incher is a good deal. the lfs that i got mine from(the only lfs that carries semi exotic sa's sold for 25 bucks at 1 and a half inch.

I don't understand when people say discus are so delicate... maybe it because I'm so critical about my water quality. If you buy juvies just keep them in a bare bottom tank with plenty of cover and do around 50% wc a week depending on filtration. Once they are 4" they are as hardy as angels. They're cheap too if you find a local breeder.

severums are called poor mans discus. discus are cool but some have weak genes you may buy 8 and end up with 4.

I read some placethat said uarus are the poor mans discus. I have heard severums called that too. But I think that because uarus like to be kept in groups they are a bit more like discus then the severum.

But really they are their own fish.

I've found uarus are delicate, when it comes to travel, when they are a small size.... had two 2 inchers die on me for no reason.
also, another lfs has had 1" ones covered in ich...

once they hit the 6" mark they are very hardy...

I've heard them be called the "poor man's discus" but they can be expensive also...

great fish though, my 9" uaru is my favorite fish, eats from my hands and i can even pet him...

I would defidently pick them up if I found 4 inchers for $13.

Hmmmm they both seem preety fair in price my lfs sells discus for 25$ each well the 4 inchers
