Is African Cichlid substrate only for them?

Im setting up a new tank and I prefer the look of the caribesea african cichlid substrates but I'm not putting any African Cichlids in there. I know it contains a buffer but will it be safe for my fish:

9in Odoe Pike, 7in Ornate, 5in IT Dat, 4 in Juruense, 9in Lima

Depends on the ph preferences of the fish you keep...

it is also used in marine tanks, because like you say it acts as a buffer to keep the hardness high and the ph alkali. the fish you have probably come from slightly acid soft to neutral waters. I would check the ph of the water with the substrate in to check its not too high...(anything over 8.0), if under that it should be fine
