I have a 100 g grow out tank with about 20 SA juvie cichlid. There is a HOB and rena xp3 filter. Is it necessary to have an airstone. The fish are all healthy. I've seen some tanks have air stones and some without. Want to know peoples opinions on here.

No, it is not necessary. You will have more than enough surface agitation to provide a sufficient amount of oxygen.

What kind of HOB and how much surface agitation do you get from each filter?

Necessary? No. I use em in all tanks in sponge filters for 3 reasons, more oxygen, a little more filtration, and in case of power outages. I don't see a negative in using em unless you're all about scaping.

Nope, not nescesary.
I use the airflow to help heat up my water with the warmth of the lights.
But it's great for the look on my tank.
I got LED spots right on top of the 4 airstones and it's a nice effect.

Air stones provide two things, surface agitation, and pretty bubbles. Whether or not your tank needs "pretty bubbles" is entirely up to you. The need for surface agitation can be met with power heads, filters etc...

They are noisy and make an algal mess on the bottom side of your glass top. I only have one tank that has one in it. I just like the way the bubbles look in that tank. No other reason.
