just wondering, there is so many kinds. getting a lot of wood, that includes the basic, malayasion, mopani and bog. but also includes wood from US rivers and some from the ocean. If i boil and or bake it, will it be fine or as topic says; is there any i need to stay away from

I think the common rule of thumb is make sure its a dead piece of wood with no sap left or seeping, and then also try and makesure its a hard wood so that it doesnt disintegrate in the tank...

I guess i should add that depending where you collect the wood, you may also want to treat it either by boiling or baking the wood to kill off any possible hitch hikers...

don't use any pine or spruce, as they will leach formaldehyde into your tank.

Soft woods such as conifers can leech several harmful chemicals. Most hard woods such as mopani, and even oak are fine for a tank. As a general rule of thumb always prep driftwood before placing it in your tank by boiling it first, then soaking it for several days. Some driftwoods may leach tannins into the water, which stain the water a tea color. These are harmless to the fish. In fact some fish enjoy "black water"
