Hey guys ,
live feeders are dangerous if you feed them to your fish right? so i was thinking of gutting them and freezing them,if this is done are they safe?

and also i read that feeder fish e.g. goldfish have "chemicals" that deplete vitamins..is this correct?if so what kind of fish doesnt contain such "chemicals"?ive been told convict cichlids are good feeders, any truth to this??

Feeders main problem is parasites. People breed convicts as feeders because they are easy to breed and then you know there is nothing wrong with them when you feed them to your fish. A lot of people feed frozen silversides to saltwater fish, so I'm guessing that freezing goldfish or rosy red minnows would kill off any parasites inside, which would make them safe to feed.

I am by no means a parasite expert... but I do know some species of parasites are exceptionally resillient and hard to kill...

There may be some types that simply go dormant in slightly frozen conditions, such as a typical home freexer. Bare in mind most industrial freezers get much colder than our home freezers... also in food prep (I believe) flash freezing is typically used, which is MUCH colder...

Again, I'm not saying this IS the case... simply pointing out a possibility...

Obviously using fish that are prepared for human consuption should be safe... but I personally wouldn't freeze possibly infected fish expecting this to make them clean...
