just seat up a new sump and was wondearing would fired hydropinic clay (expanded clay) be good to use as media and would it have any affect on ph

I can think of two info sources to pull from... Seachem call's their flourite a clay, & says that it will not affect pH. Fired clay is essentially ceramic. Since ceramic rings are used in canister filters without affecting pH I'd think your stuff would be ok. I don't know what this "hydropinic / expanded" stuff is about but it sounds like it would add surface area much like the typical canister biomedia ceramics. So, I give it a thumbs up.

Pardon me if I overlooked anything here:
I would say that fired clay would be fine as long as it wasn't glazed. The fired clay, as others have stated, should act like other ceramic media that you can store buy.

P.S........if you are using small pieces in your filters, make sure they don't collide to much/at all. The constant collisions/cavitations could result in ceramic dust entering your impeller sumps and wreaking havoc on the magnets, bearing etc.
