So I got a little comet a couple of weeks ago. I quarantined him for a couple of days but he looked fine so I put him in with my gold fish, about 5 days latter he had clamped fins and he wouldn't use his right pectoral fin. So he went back in to the quarantine tank where soon after he died. That was a couple of days ago and I’ve been watching my other fish to see if they get sick. So today I noticed that one of my calico fantails isn't using his left pectoral fin, but he doesn't have clamped fins and I haven't seen him rub up against things, he is eating just as always. But im still worried.

Do you think he might be sick? Or am I just overreacting?

kinda like this guy --->:nilly:

It's not a good sign but I hope he gets over it. Finding a cure to these mystery diseases is frustrating. I have noticed that the medicine manufacturers don't do a good job in teaching us when to use which of their products. Unless a fish is ravaged with a growth and it at the brink of death, it is difficult to determine what is ailling the fish.

Pretty much the big three problems that we can treat is bacteria, fungus, and parasite infestations. Since it is a contact disease, it could be any of the three but is most likely a fungal infection. Bacteria seems to be almost as easy to transmit. The only information that I have gathered in deciding which to treat is to try one treatment and if that doesn't work, do the other treatment. Some medications that I have used caused extreme stress in otherwise healthy fish (less infection) and have managed to finish off the fish.

I am not sure how goldfish respond to salt treatments but that might be a good start since your fish is still healthy. Salt (aquarium salt) will kill many types of bacteria and it is a good practice to use in hospital and quarantine tanks. There are different recommendations in doseages but I just go by the instructions on the box.

Good luck, and I hope your fish gets better.
