Man-induced inbreeding of animals has been going on since cave days. The selective in-breeding of animals to promote desired traits is called line-breeding (more milk producing cows, leaner beef, spotted (ocelot) house cats, larger sled dogs, faster race horses, etc). However, stretching the genetic line out too far can have grossly adverse effects. One effect is reduced hybrid vigor which can leave the line open to many genetic defects such as epilepsy, hip displasia, deafness, hemophilia, cancers, and a host of other diseases/defects.
