Yesterday while browsing my LFS, i come across a tank with about 15 1-2.5inch mang. in it, all but 2 are huddled at the top corner of the tank, solid black and:owned: me being the expert that i am:ROFL: i noticed 2 jags paired off, i said to my son look those two little jags paired up(AT THAT SIZE I DIDN'T KNOW THEY SHOWED SUCH BEHAIVOR) anyway i was so interested i kept watch for @least 20 minutes, and low and behold i spotted a batch of wrigglers:WHOA: placed in between two pieces of driftwood. WOW. Anyway i'm curious, is this normal for jags that size to mate and have success fertilizing. Sorry no pics available didn't have cam but i will get some tommorow.

Wow, that is crazy... I had no idea they could breed at that size... amazing.

yeah im sayin if they have been in that tank for a while they may be mature but just stunted..

I have never seen any spawn that small either but dovii88 has a interesting theory how often do u visit that lfs? I guess u would have seen them befor if they had been for several months in the same tank.

I had a pair of motas breed 2 weeks ago. The male was maybe 2.5", probably closer to 2" and the female was just shy of 3". Dovii88, that is an interesting theory and may prove to be true; however, my female is now 3.5" and the male is closing in on 3" so that doesn't seem like stunted growth on their part.

I would have bagged them and brought them home. That's exactly how I found my first pair. I think the male's a bit stunted but still a beautiful fish. Just a little small for his age.

Buy them and maybe you can start breeding dwarf jags.

at my lfs they had three jewel cichlids and 2 of them paired up and layed eggs. once the eggs hatched they killed the third jewel. these fish were all no more than 2 inches. pretty strange in my opinion, as my male and female jewels are both either at or pushing four inches and they have only bred once.

oh ya, my jewels are from the same tank as the other said pair.

Dug up the pics of my small motas..
