Cheers,

um id assume not in america but im sure possibly in thailand or somewhere over there..but no id find it highly illegal i mean you can die from these things so fast..

If your bit the bacteria in there saliva will kill you slowly and painfully from infection. I think they have like 52 bacteria in their saliva and 4 are deadly.

Herd big debates in my local reptile shop about this saliva stuff lol if they eat captive born foods they wont have diseases so it would stop them from getting bacteria infested mouths etc, it started when I mentioned my nile monitor lol. My guess is illegal because they are rediculously big with plain brute strength and very little fear of humans at large size, they would be good samuri lol not affraid of death....what so ever!

Ive herd 13 are known to make you incredibly ill if not dead, were on the same lines :P

I would research how they get the bacteria's still to make sure that you have no chance of infection even after being bitten.

No, they are endangered and on the same sort of contract as Pandas are. Any of them in captivity belong to the government of the island of Komodo and so do any babies. They are just on loan. The only way to get some into private hands is illegally and there is no legal way to get one even if you are patient and rich enough to attempt a permit (which is more than likely to be shot down without being a very notable zoo type institution) it will not be yours, it will be on loan to you from the government of Komodo.

There are some in private hands but they are not legal. I know of 2 in the states but that is all I can say because as mentioned above, there is no legal way to get them...

Wasnt going against anyone with that comment btw, was just saying there was an arguement about it lol

Found this on yahoo answers- Not very credible, but makes sense:

They are internationally protected because they are very endangered, and the Indonesian government doesn't allow them to possessed by anyone except zoos. And to clear up a couple of answers, the deadly bacteria in their mouth come from eating decaying flesh. They aren't born with this. That means the few Komodos in captivity in zoos do not have dangerous bacteria in their mouths. In other words, the answers saying they are illegal to own because of their dangerous, bacteria infested bites are incorrect.

Also in response to bacteria, there are a dozen types that live in our mouths that can be deadly. It is Venom that does the killing. These are some of the more venomous monitor lizards but all Varanids have been found to have rudimentary venom glands and a delivery system.
