I am starting to want to breed a few fish. I dont know what yet...ill just decided as I go...but I already have a wild pair of Festae. I am in the process of looking at used tanks to have for the breeders and raising fry. Is it better to have systems with several tanks connected on one filter system or separate tanks with there own filters. I would kinda think separate for ease of treating fish if they get sick...but I see some people who have these nice systems with the tanks drilled and connected. Since im looking for used stuff right now I wouldn't be able to drill them more than likely...but could run power filters and canisters on all the separate setups since most of the used tanks I see have some sort of filters coming with them.

Any input welcome....

IMO i would put sponge filters for the fry tanks and thats a pretty cheap method of filtration for the tanks. And i would use a canister filter for the breeder tank

Really..... you could do either. With the central setups, you would just have to make sure that there is no way for the fry to get through the filter. I have had many fish magically appear in another tank.

Of course, separated tanks and sponge filters with a blower are a cheap and efficient way to go.

The main benefit of having a central system is having water conditions that are more stable, central heating and cheaper filtration.

Thanks for the input...I have worked at lfs that had central systems and I can see both the good and bad of them I think I will just keep them mostly unconnected.
