Hi guys
Here my electric blue, he lives in all male 120g long. He is about 6 inches long.
On the picture you will notice a yellow band and some yellow marking on dorsal, I never really seen this on any scianochromis. He is also quite mellow, he is almost as big as my biggest fishes but struggle to color up. Is it a hybrid??A24947F7-E94F-48B2-B8A1-B39631E4E585.jpeg228D5BF8-105D-4D74-9129-B79D842CA34A.jpeg4BFB1B97-EC9C-40EE-8A5F-DA3BAD779B4E.jpeg

Looks normal to me, just not very colored up yet.
Im slowly losing hope for this one, he have good size, no one really bothers him and still he is far from electric blue. I had him in a grow out tank where he was dominated by strawberry albino who is almost an 1inch smaller then electric blue.
Is it true that all males will at some time color up or mayby he will stay like this forever?

There's no accounting for genetics. I've had several promising male African Cichlids turn out to be duds. Lol.

Unfortunately hybrids abound in the African cichlid hobby, which is why I always try to use proper Latin names, and only ever bought from trusted sources.

And that makes sense now, because as I stated in my initial comment if that was a pure S. fryeri, even a sub dominant male fryeri would be showing at least some color at that size.

I have seen countless numbers of S. fryeri over the years, in all stages of growth & coloration, and I have never seen an adult male that looked the one in the OP's pics, at 6".

To be clear, he can be 5.5in, but I guess it will not change your opinion much?
I have this bad boy with him, he is ex boss and pretty mean but he never chases scianochromis.

Could this be the reason?

If thats not the reason - are scianochromis fryeri somehow immune for being subdominant fish in a tank, no matter of tank mates?
You told me once that aulonocara have this tendency to really lose colours because of tankmates but is it any different with “haps”?
