been getting bored staring at my 125 with my rhom in it and all the wasted space, so ive put him back in to a 55. my question is: is it just a matter of his length and being able to turn around when i should put him in a bigger tank? cause he doesnt swim around much and he is only 7" while the tank has a 13" footprint, so i know i have plenty of time till he cant turn. so why else should he have so much room?

All the ones I had/have actually do swim around a lot when I'm not looking, how did I find out? thanks to IP camera.

mines only in a 75 but it swims around ALOT. always playing in the powerhead and swimming around the decor

i've only seen him swim around in the 125 when the lights are off. i know thats pretty regular behavior, but in the 55 its like eddie's. he swims at all levels and all around. he even swims in the powerhead stream more in the 55. i think he's just more comfortable in the smaller space for now.

Some fish are like this. I have had a few different species of fish that when i moved them to there new bigger home they wouldnt move around much. But put them back in there originall home and they loved it. Rhoms take a long time to grow any ways. Probaully take it 2 years to out grow the 55. I miss my carib i had now i live in s.c now more for me. But to answer your originaul quistion is it just a matter of turning around? I would say it is alot more then that. My first concern when moving fish to bigger tanks is bio load. Sence it is easier to maintain and more healthy for the growing fish to have access amounts of water. Then doing partial or full water changes ever couple days. All fish have different turning radiesses a rhom needs a tank wider then they are to turn around. But by no means at all is a 55 to small for that size fish and species. I had blue diamond in a 55 for 4 years got it at 2 inches and it was only 5 1/2 when i got rid of it. And i take better care of my fish then me.

I've always found Rhoms prefer smaller tanks, actually Serra's in general in my experience prefer smaller tanks. My little Rhom is 7", and is in a 3ft x 14 x 16" and loves it.

cool, thanks guys. i think i might get something cool to put in the 125. i guess i just have to figure out what can go in to the 55 after the 125.

My rhoms are very active, enjoy all the space in their big tank (220G)... and love swimming against the powerhead currents... OPEFE has some really good info about home aquarium setting recommendations for them.
