I had picked up one at a local lfs along with a handful of other cichlids to grow out in a tank to see what I liked best... It worked well and we've culled out all but our favorite and are now figureing how we are going to keep the ones we like or rehome like we did the others... So ATM we have two Butti, a GT, and a trio of Mayans... There is aggression... But everyone seems to have their place and no major damage is being done... but out larger Butti is stressing and constantly harassing the second at any given opportunity... But the smaller fish (not by much but apparently enough) isnt really showing excessive split fins ect... They are about 6"-8" now and we just did a 75% wc tonight after missing last weeks ( i know :( ) And the big guy paled out and started showing courting behavior! Is this possibly a pair? The smaller one seemed responsive and they "danced" around the tank most the rest of the night. Atm evryone has been in a 40B but I was looking to upgrade them and start splitting fish up... I'm debating if its a good idea to just leave everyone else with the Buttis? As dithers? i noticed since we culled others out (including a red devil who use to be boss and terrorized everyone) the big Butti genrally leaves everyone else alone unless they start scuffling... But they also will interupt him when hes really chasing the other Butti... I'm concerned if I put the pair in their own tank i'll end up with one Butti.... Or since they seem to started bonding should they play nicer now and be a bigger threat to tankmates? What have others experianced with these guys? These are the first truely territorially aggressive fish i've had in a long time. I'd love to keep them in a semi community or at least a pair if they are male/female. I really do not want just a single fish in a tank... We already have the aba aba set-up.

Well in a 40 gallon your set up won't last another a few months if they're all already around 7".

I've already got a 75 set-up and cycled in anticipation of splitting them... I don't recall asking what size tank they need, I did that research before I bought them. They've grown to that size from 1.5" about 2 monthes ago give or take. Enjoy NLS and Veggie flakes and sinking wafers, and otherwise are healthy fish. I know what I have to work with and trying to cram fish into situations that are not healthy for them is what i'm trying to avoid by asking for oppinions from people who have owned them on what to expect in this situation. But Ty for your input, I agree. The Butti are the biggest fish in the tank, the GT is about 5" and the mayans 3-4" two on the smaller side.

If they do pair Id suggest a tank bigger than 75 for an adult pair. Butti don't live well long term with others unless the tank is 180+. Id suggest separating the butti and observing wether or not they truly wish to pair. If you leave the others they will just be slaughtered by a butti pair
