Hello, I have white sand in my tank, and when I feed my clown knife he gets a mouth full of sand and spits it back out. Is this safe? will he accidentally eat sand and block his digestive system?

Or is he like the polypterus and can eat whatever solid non food items he feels like?

Oh and he is the most awesome fish ever he begs for food. He actually comes out of hiding and stares at me till I get the food out, then he thrashes about once he sees the hikari bag

Oh I am currently feeding him Hikari sinking carnivore pellets because its the only pellet my ornate poly will eat because I am lazy and dont want to have to feed them different foods.

Well...it isn't good for a Poly to eat anything non edible as well. Sand is preferred among Poly keepers because if it happens to eat any substrate, it's better to eat something small that will more likely pass than something that will block it up. CKs are the same. If it happens to digest any sand, it should be safe since the sand should be small enough to pass.

in they wild they could accidentally be eating something worse.

yea i realy dont think that aquarium sand will effect them when my motoros pounce on ghost shrimp they stir up the sand an probly get some in there, they never seem to be bothered by it so i dont c a problem there

ok thank you guys =]

my ornate somehow eats them off the floor like a vacuum and doesnt get any sand but the clown knife scoops them up like his jaw is a shovel ha.

i think it is fine if the sand is big

Adding floating pellets would also add more dimension to feeding, as well as giving your Ornate some exercise.

Agreed, not to mention any single food most likely will not keep the fish healthy no matter how good the quality of that one food is, the fish may develop an exclusive taste for it, and it is likely very boring to them.

Agreed.

BTW, while your at it, why don't you introduce something like Ghost Shrimp into the diet?
