colorado!
im curious if feeding Gar feeder gold fish is ok?

ive been told by my LFS that GAR and Cuda, dont get diseases that gold fish carry, such as hole in the head etc that say a cichlid would get from feeders...

so im curious is gold fish feeders a good diet? i also feed mine lil snacks like ghost shrimp, and im going to everyonce in a while give him a nice treat African Dwarf frog!!

also can you feed them dead or deformed gold fish? (i dont feed any of my fish dead fish. they get thrown out, i prob will keep it that way, was just curious)

ALSO ANY TANK MATE SEGJESTIONS FOR GAR!!!???? 10"+

EVERYONE SAYS NO BARRACUDA! but im trying it. MY LFS had them together for months and said they were fine... (gar dont like silver fish dont try it , i know.)

so what else would i feed?

its not a good staple diet.
Varied is the best way to go IMO. mine gets shrimp, tilapia(packed with pellets), ghost shrimp, rosy reds, goldys, tetras, worms and many others.

LP nailed it as far as foods, variety is most important. I would only feed live foods as a treat. Parasites can be spread from the food to your gar.

What kind of barracuda is it?

Goldfish are a poor source of nutriants required for health in the two fish that you mention. The barracuda will however make an excellent (albiet very expensive) nutritional snack for your gar, if properly gut-loaded first.

Silverside will work as well as or better then the barracuda as for nutritional feed, and high quality pellets can be stuffed into the silversides for even better results!)

If freshwater (Redtail & Yellowtail) it would make no difference. They will both be Gar feed in time. I have a longnnose gar going on 30" that has devoured/ demolished:
1. Clown Knife
1. Redtail Barracuda
2. Yellowtail Barracuda
2. Asain Needlenose Gar (needlefish)
5 - 8. smaller LNG's
1. Bowfin
1. extremely fat Florida Gar (very nearly it's size at the time)

I agree with you that those species would get eaten. Some of the other kinds like the saber tooth barracudas some gar keepers have some luck with. Still not recomended though as a tankmate.

What species of gar will also contribute to what tankmates will work.
