Is it ok to be picky about who you sell or give your fish to?

I have some juvenile frontosa for sale, and this guy is simply hounding me to give him 3 because they would be great in his SA cichlid tank...

I ask tons of questions about where the fish will be going.. the water params, tank size, other fish, experience, tank maint... etc..

Is that too much?

no its not they are your fish and you dont want them to go to some newbie that will kill them in a day i am the same with any fish i sell lol

no not if you want them to be be homed right and have the fish to be happy

This guy has the decency to ask me where else he could buy them since I wouldn't sell them to him... uhm, wtf buddy? You think I'm going to tell you just so you can kill them?

uhm... no.

You can be as picky as you would like. As long as you do not NEED to make the sale, you have all the power in the transaction. Of course rejecting potential buyers will greatly limit your ability to move the fish and the money you could make from them. As long as you have space to keep them and aren't worried about losing the sale, be as aggressive as you want on stipulations. If the buyers don't like it, they are free find their own.

Be aware that after the sale, the buyer will have all the power and could have just given you BS answers.

i sold all my piranhas for literally 10% of what i wanted becuase it was to someone who really wanted them and could care for them. i didnt even want any money, but he insisted. it was really about seeing they got the proper care and brought someone else joy

If it's a fish I particularly like, I will definitely be picky about who gets them. I'd rather give them away for free to a proper home than sell them.

Don't sell fronts to someone who wants to throw them in a SA tank... Totally agree with you on that one.

Would you be just as picky if you had a litter of puppies or kittens?... Just becasue fish live in water many people treat them as one of the lowest pets. But that doesn't mean you should feel bad for being just as discriminating as any good Animal breeder is.

Trust your gut.. maybe this person does know what they are doing and understands that the fronts are not mixed w/ SA's generally but would be fine in this set-up. Alot of people mix fish from different waters. most community tanks have fish from all over the world. the simple fact this person wants to mix fish shouldn't make you worry imo.. but thats just me. the very least i would give the person credit for being honest with you about their intentions.

Everyone sees mixes here that work and have been told wouldn't work. Yes often times uneducated or prepared keepers make stupid combos. Did you ask them if they had a back-up plan if the fish didn't get along?

sounds to me like the person rubbed you wrong some way.

You are right... everyone has their mixes that work.. I have one myself.

But the kid asked me what color the Frontosa were... I thought he meant variety, but no.. he meant color. He said he would take 1 of each color. :screwy:
