Due to my green terrors frequent breeding I have been growing fry in a 55 gallon tank for about six months. I still have the biggest males and some females after selling most. A few of them have obviously been pairing up (at 2"). Is it ok for the same offspring to breed together?
Yes it is ok that is how many of the different colors of a species come to be. they are line bred or as your case brother and sister crossed until a desired trait forms and then bred some more until it becomes the common trait when the fish are bred. A outside fish or 2 showing the same traits will be bred in as well to keep the line strong enough to survive.
I don't believe in inbreeding dogs and cats. And I don't do it with my fish. I am going to look around my house tomorrow because there was a study done on this at a university. It showed that fish from the same parents would not pair up when there were other fish from different parents in the same tank. I will find the article and let everyone know where they can get it. The experiment is at least 7 or 8 years old.
Pairing up siblings is a normal and common practice. Your green terrors likely come from many generations of sibling pairing down the line. If you bought them at the same time from the same tank they are likely siblings. You can sell pairs for more money.
Dave if you do not believe i breeding dogs and cats where do think peoples pets have come from and you should have bought only 1 green terror. Animals breeding is a fact of life and the fact that you got to witness it with your fish and watch them raise their fry you should consider that a true pleasure. I don;t think your terrors found it unbearable. Just enjoy this and maybe use the fry to help pay for tank and fish up keep. This is the way the oldest prffesion on earth farming has been done forever.
I never said I dont believe in breeding my fish, on the contrary I would like like to keep growing a strong bloodline and eventually breed in traits like a bigger nachul hump.
Then your goal here will be to pick out fish out of your spawns with larger nachul humps and breed them to each other. The set back here is you will have to keep fish until maturity which takes alot of time and space. You will also need to look at alot of other green terrors looking for the traits you want and add them to your blood lines. The positive will be that people will want your blood lines and hopefuly pay theextra to get them. I wish you all the best and don't worry about brothers and sisters mating.
