Is it ok to plant a potho in a freshwater tank?

Pothos plants themselves cannot be submerged as they will rot. If you just submerge the roots in water they are a great nitrate reducer.

I had a buddy who fully submerged pothos and it didn't rot. It eventually grew tall enough to where it had leaves outside of the tank as well.

I told him over and over he was just killing the plant, but after about two years (I moved) I stopped because it wasn't happening. Of course, when I tried to submerge pothos, they rotted and died within about 2 weeks...sometimes life isn't fair.

Stems and leaves that are grown under water can be kept under water. If they were grown terrestrially then they will rot when submerged.

It will die if the plant mass is submerged. Unless there are leaves/vines out of the water as well but still the leaves in the water will die, could have been a different plant.
