Is it ok to have you pumps and filters on only 8 hours a day on your ponds then turn them all off until the next morning everyday of the year ?

My dads friend does this and says it the correct way to run a pond , i think diffrent and they should be on all the time . He also turns them off for the whole of winter too .

My dads says we are going to start doing this now only having them on 8 hours a day , because the electic bill is getting really high . His friend says his bill is very low compeired too ours .

We have two 120Gal tanks running and 2 medium size ponds ,
Dads friend is running 2 120Gal tank but 1 large pond .

What would you say with this issue i am having ? Fighting with my dad too keep the pumps and filters on all day all night not just 8 hours a day .

i cant imagine it would benefit the fish, but it sure would lower the electricity bill

Mine runs all day, everyday. My pump is a high effecient model that runs year round. Last months electric bill was 15 bucks for my whole house, pond, 3 tanks. Don't know what the electricity costs by you, but not running it all day probally won't save that much money. Tell your day you will do a few things around the house to cut down electricity bills. Install compact flour. in the house, turn off the lights when you leave a room, invest in a newer pump. Simple fixes that will off set the running costs.

The fish and BB will thank you.

I have told him i would be willing to pay something towoards the electric bill , but nope he want let me .

I already do thing round the house too so its not like i am not doing anything to help out .

Pumps and stuff for the ponds are pretty new , we only changed them last year from older models.

Basicly we get are Electric bill quarterly ( i think that mean every couple months ) , and i think of what i remeber him telling me the other week it is a 3 figer number . VERY HIGH IMO .

The fish will benefit from increased O2 in the water, cleaner water, and and all around better environment from running the filter.

Run your shed pond on Solar. Put the pump you just bought on it, and buy a high effecient one for the outdoor.

I only run my 300g pond for only 3 hours a day through my timer and they are fine...

What do you stock?

Chicago burbs.

Thinking of installing an electric heat system of some sort. My little house, 900 or so sq.ft. had a gas bill of 280.00 last month. Granted my windows are 50 years old and not exactly effecient, but I thought that was dog doo. Need to figure out something for the winter months here.
