Guatemala City
Today I was home just watching some tv when sudenly I hear a noise out of the window so I came out to check, for my surprise it was a green iguana that came out of nowhere, I was able to catch it, it didnt runed away or got scared or nothing it just stood still whitch makes me think it was someones pet, I live in the city so it isnt wild (I live in Guatemala so its not hard to come across them) I also asked my neighbors and it seems it doesnt have an owner.
It is around 50 cm long including the tail, so its kind of big, right now i cannot afford to keep it so I was thinking to get it back to the wild, so here is my question, i know that you cannot return a fish back to a river because it introduces diseases to the habitat, so is it ok if I return it to the wild?

Thanks for your help

I would release it to the wild, if they are native there and you found it outside... I would guess that it's more likely to be wild than an escaped pet, and being in a city it may be used to human interaction and maybe even fed scraps from people which would explain it's tameness...

well I found it outside but there are no iguanas left in the city (people here eats them), so I dont think it was born in the wild, they are widely available at petstores, my best guess its that it scaped or was released and has been living outside.

This is a tough one. Part of me says release it because like Sylvias said, it was outside so it could be wild and they are native there. But part of me agrees with the same concept of the fish rule in that you could introduce pathogens to the wild population if it is an escaped captive animal.

why don't you set up a crude outdoor habitat for him? after all you are in its native range so the temperature etc should all remain around the acceptable level. they make pretty good pets and many people have CB ones that are still considered not tame. so its a pretty unique find
