Would a gar get bored if kept alone or is it advisable for beginners like me to only keep one? I was thinking no plants and just a piece of wood. Or should it be totally empty?

i'm a newbie too and i'm only keeping one for now.
as i've done a lot of reading before i bought my gar, i read that they are solitary fishes.
so i think they should be okay alone.
also about the plants..
solomon recommended me to have some floating plants, and did get some.
although it's not required.

hope this helps a little

I just got it Nocturnal! Real beauty in my opinion.

My tank's a 20g for now. Will get bigger ones as it grows.

that's really nice, i bet your really happy with him now haha :)
post some pictures mate!

You'll need a bigger tank in 2 months or less. My first gar was in a 55 by the 3rd month, and a 180g by the 6 or 7th.

Congrat's on the pickup.

Thanks! I've been looking at pictures and i can't tell what kind of gar he is. Thinking either a longnose or a florida. The sticky said longnose gar juveniles are hard to distinguish at a young age, so i don't know really. Will try to get some pics after i borrow my girl's DSLR later.

Unfortunately it died. I don't know why but my fishes seem to keep dying once i've put them into the 20g. Got 3 oscars and they died only after 1 night in there as well.
