Is it overfeeding if the food is live? I mean, will it have the negative effects of overfeeding that come with flake and crumble and pellet food?

It seems that the live white worms and live red wigglers I use might be safer and better, as they are not loaded with the stuff that becomes phosphates and makes algae and causes really dirty gravel. I basically ruined my first tank by overfeeding becoming dirty gravel.

Is it reasonable to assume that if I feed worms and watch them get eaten, they are not polluting the tank like commercial fish food?

Any thoughts?

Obviously live food doesn't break down until its expelled or dead so their are benefits when it comes to cleanliness in some cases but at the same time "dead" live food when left inside the tank can pose much more of a threat then some flakes! And depending on the type of fish they can rip live food like fish, worms, crustaceans etc apart and leave a mess as well.

Good pellets and flakes definitely have the advantage when it comes to long term overall health benefits! They are easy to obtain, easy to feed and contain many nutrients that just plain worms do not have! Many will agree that on a long term basis high quality manufactured fish food is the best option, along with some live is even better assuming the live in question are healthy! Variance among captive animal diets is good!

If you have that much of a mess and algae outbreak from pellets then you are either overfeeding or not discarding the uneaten bits!
