Reason I ask is I think a Bee killed my Flagfish. I kept the Flagfish outdoors in a 55 gallon rubbermaid pond and has lived there for 2 years fine. This year I have seen an increase in Bees in my backyard. Since I garden I planted more flowers to attract more bees to pollinate my plants. The bees also use this pond to drink water. Everyday I find a few drowned bees and sometimes some drowning that I save. The other day I saw a drowning bee struggling and my Flagfish must have been curious and was sort of nudging it. Anyway, I got atleast 20 bees at any given time drinking water from this pond. This evening I saw the Flagfish laying on its side up by the top. Sometimes it likes to do this and I decided to grab the fish because I wanted to get a closer look at it. At first the fish moved just a little bit but within seconds the fish was limp and lifeless. It may sound crazy but I have this theory it got stung by a bee. All the circumstances and evidence is there and I don't see how this fish would die especially being healthy it was still a young fish. The fact the fish moved for a little bit before it died leaves me to believe that the accident happened maybe a few moments before I got there. Even the bees are somewhat aggressive when I stand there or move things around in the pond. But they have not stung me yet. Given the size of the fish I think a sting from a bee is enough venom to kill it. What do you guys think? Here is my Flagfish that died. Threw him into the compost bin after these pics. If any of you guys know was it a male or female?

Sorry you lost your fish. As crazy as this sounds, this isn't the first time I've heard a story like this. Basically the same thing: bees gather around the pond and goldfish owner found a fish dead. Water parameters checked out. The only explanation we came up with was bee sting. It sounds like a likely candidate here, too.

Agreed with Joe. This is very old mature male Flagfish and I do not see any swelling if it was stung by a bee.

BTW bees are natural prey items for some fishes out in the wild.
