Well ii know tilapia Butterkoferi arent supposed to have tankmates... but before i make my final decision on if i want to get rid of him i wanted to know if anything can be his tankmate besides a pleco. He was extremely agressive when he was younger but now at about 7" in a 55 all to himself he just moaps and rarely eats feeders. Do you guys think maybe a 7" clown knife or some other cichlids would work? I also heard if the Tilapia knows it is the most dominant it would leave all smaller fish alone like in an african cichlid tank? (dont know how valid that last point is) Thanks for any responses ~~~ Tom.

i'd try some more things, like some jewel cichlids, cause they can defend themselves, but at the same time aren't big enough to do any serious damage to your tilapia. also, the fish live in the same environment in the wild, so thats another plus.

ill keep that in mind but was looking for something dif then a cichlid as well... as i stated would an african knife be too much? or maybe a smaller wolf fish?

I really want to get a Payara Scom as well so possible tank mate either clown knife or that? what do you guys think? BTW i am rearranging the tank for ample hiding spots as right now there are none cause its just him.

A payara would get owned by your butti. They are highly specialised piscivores, but they are not aggressive. A wolf might stand a chance though. I think a clown knifefish would get owned too, unless it's much larger than the buttikoferi.

If your Butti is living alone and has for a while, chances are it will never except a tankmate.

damn, talk about a repost.........................

Anyway, it's a 55 gallon tank, so I would say that maybe, just maybe you can get one more fish in there with them, but the butti is going to out grown that tank in a little while, well maybe a long while. My thing is, if you add another aggressive fish in there, it's probably not going to end up well for one of the two. I think in order to add tank mates now, you would have to take the butti out and put it in a different tank with other fish introduced at the same time so non is dominant or has a territory. As of right now, it is probably a tuff thing to do.

Oh and by the way, Butti's are not predators, feeders aren't really that great for them, don't get me wrong they are not straight herbs but eating feeders really isn't what they should be muching on. They will take them because they are opportunist and anything really small will be eaten. Just FYI, your fish though and by all means keep it as you like.

I'm wondering when my butti is going to start getting aggressive.. Hes the runt of my 30g tank right now but everybody gets along amazing. Here is what I have in the tank right now.

2" buttikoferi
2" kenyi
2.5" jewel
4" convict
5.5" jack dempsey

the most aggressive fish in the tank as of now is the stupid jewel.
