I can pick up a needlefish at a local canal which is saltwater and was wondering if it is possible to acclimate them to freshwater, I know there are freshwater needlefish, are they the same thing? Also, if I can acclimate how should i go about this, how periodically should I put in the freshwater or take out the saltwater?

I looked into these quite some time ago, I believe that the most common freshwater pipe is actually a brackish fish... However I believe there is actually a straight freshwater pipefish out of Africa... I would steer clear of trying to acclimate the wild caught one though, at the least a high salinity brackish, but like a lot of brackish fish the adults will probably need straight marine to be healthy and happy.

Ok, the only thing that gets me is that I have some in my canal which is purely freshwater but theyre not very common, I couldnt imagine them being a different species, but maybe because I know the petsmart down my road sells freshwater ones.

Heres a picture of a good one I caught, didnt keep him but was tempted, look at those teeth.

salt is salt and fresh is fresh - as far as i know. There are some species born in brackish environments, but go back to the sea. Bull sharks have developed of a system of storing salt. Methinks any fish not living in its natural basic elements will have a shortened life span.

I wouldn't attempt it, probably won't work, just settle for the Xenentodon cancila from petsmart.
