Is it possible to build a canister filter or a sealed sump just thought that if i could do this then the pump pumping to the tank would also pull from the tank(in theory) anyhow if this could be done then there would be no chance of sump overflow.

What does everyone think

You would be better to build a wet/dry.

When a homemade canister leaks it does it BIG.

Get one of those 2.5 or 5 gallon drinking jugs

used on construction sites with a screw on lid. Mount a pump to the inside of the lid and drill a hole through the lid. Run the power wire through the hole and seal it BIGTIME. Drill a hole at the bottom and top of the "canister" on either side. Use the bottom hole for the "entry" of the water. Tap it with hose leading to the hole, and a diffuser plate inside it.

Place your media, beginning with foam pads, then bio, then whatever, into the canister. Tap the other hole in the top with the "exit" side of the pump and finally back into the tank. Just a quick idea.

If you like using a sealed pressure system then look into the ocean clear line of filter componants. You wont be building the individual componants but you CAN set the system up the way you want it and it's totally safe. There are two other brands built along the same lines but the names escape me at the moment.
