I want to shorten a standard 55g to about 14 inches. I don't have any experience with DIY and I am in no position to try, but I'd like to know if it's possible so I can ask around in my area for anyone who can do it (too late at night atm, but I'd like to know for next opportunity). Just to be sure, I mean to cut the aquarium down WITHOUT disassembling the whole thing.

If it is possible, what are the risks?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cutting glass involves etching a snap line and snapping individual panes to size them. Then the edge is ground to eliminate sharp projections. Can't see anyone cutting down a constructed 55gal tank. Also, can you tell if the glass is plate or tempered? You can cut plate glass but, tempered glass will shatter under cutting or drilling.

I'm trying to turn a bad buy into a cool tank (triggered by inability to sell said bad buy), so buying more tanks isn't really the idea. But thanks for replying!

Didn't see this reply, sorry...

I don't have any idea about temprered or plate. I've barely even looked at the thing since I threw it in my garage with disgust. But if it can't be done then there's no helping it I guess.

What's wrong with it? If it can't hold water, could you turn it into a terrarium? We had a leopard gecko in a an old fish tank once...

Clockwork - On second thought, that sounds so much safer than what I wanted to try, and I'm already dead-set on the size. Didn't know tank dimensions like that were normally made, I'll be on the lookout for one. Thanks!

Kelly: It's brand new, so it's perfectly great with water. But yeah, I'm thinking I'm just going to go with ACO's suggestion, I already have the lid/lights, so.... cost of bare tank - sale price of old tank = happy me budget-wise. >>
