Hi,
I am looking to put a uv sterilizer on my tank, its about 1500L, and there is about a $10.00 difference between an 18w and a 36w sterilizer, I am kinda going with the more is more view, but can anyone shed some light on the issue?..
I will be running a sump with the uv in the return pipework...
If anyone can help, it would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If it's only $10 difference definitely go with the 36w sterilizer. 18w is a small sterilizer for a 400gal tank in my opinion. although its just enough to sterilize your tank, UV sterilizer is something you want to go bigger if possible just like sumps, filters, etc. You cannot over sterilze, it'll just be more efficient!. Plus if you ever upgrade to a bigger tank, you can use the same UV. I have a 57W on my 240gal. As for running it on a return pipe, that'll work but I've always used a seperate pump. It's easier to control flow rate without affecting your return flow rate. Just make sure you have the proper flow rate for what you are trying to do, clarifying the tank or sterilizing the tank. Different wattage and brand have different flow rate requirements, this should be in your manual.

That depends.
On an established tank, a year or more of successful operation, the answer is no.
A UV put on an immature tank is not a good idea..My thoughts.
Many things are going on in a tank as it stabilizes and a UV could retard the balance needed.
I agree with a separate pump or branching off of the return line so you could regulate the flow through the UV unit, without affecting the overall flow of your return.
A little looking around will give you the flow rates for general algae control and the reduced rate for bacterial death dealing.
I also agree the clarity you get with a UV is stunning.
Might look at the price difference of replacement bulbs before you make your decision.
