Question is simple, is it possible to breed petsmart/petco bettas to the point of having high quality bettas? If so, how many generations do you think it would take? Would inbreeding play a big role in this?

Honestly I would just try and get the best quality fish that you can afford and work from there. Genetics are funny and you'll take a lot of time and selective breeding (and lots of tanks) so fish that you know have good genes will give you better babies :)

Wouldn't bother breeding pets mart ones at all, they are so inbred it's horrifying.

Buy from a good source and buy good fish

The answer to your question depends on what your definition of a "High Quality Betta" Is.. What are you breeding for? Sales, Competition, The love of animals, Improving the line? That one should be a given but everybody has a different hobby. I personally bought my girl a HM Dumbo from Petsmart For a Pet and then turned around and ordered a spectacular pair from Thailand. I breed for sales and for competition so I wouldn't ever bother with LFS bettas because that's not what the market calls for and I dont have 9 thousand jars to put a bunch of fish I cant sell in. Thats the reason I got cichlids to begin with but In the end The answer to your question depends upon the overall results you are looking for However if in the end you do choose to breed LFS rescues atleast you will be doing the animal a favor and also will improve the line even if it doesn't turn into a Grand Champion or sell for 350.00 on aquabid.

I would guess it would take more money breeding and caring for the fish over several generations to purify the line then buying high quality ones from the start. And that isn't taking into consideration the countless fry you would have to cull because the poor things would have so many health issues from inbreeding. Plus, a price tag can't be put on owning a beautiful pair of bettas. :)
