use older Canister filters, I.E. fluvals without the media baskets? I think itd be ok if all your media is in bags. just not sure.
 
It depends,Why arent you using the baskets?If you can figure out a way to make the water pass thru the media and use media that doesnt get into the impeller or get blown into the tank why not. you could probably work something out with quilt batting.

I have the baskets, was just curious if you could leave them out.
 
Better to use them If nothing else provides more surface area for bacteria to colonize
 
the baskets are there mainly for seperating media making it easier to dispose or clean. You can use media bag but I think the basket well be less hassle.
