I am looking into buying an RO system and I'm thinking there has to be a way of DIYing one out of parts. It's basically a series of canisters with an inlet and outlet daisy chained through other canisters. Anyone done this or know how? Are the tops that the canister connects to available? I can get water line, fittings, the clear part of the canister, obviously the filters, yada yada yada, but can't find the tops to to the canisters. Any input would be great. Thx!

RO units started out as diy systems people buit from basic plumbing/readily available parts. The membrane canisters have been developed to fit in smaller space but the sediment canisters are simple and easy to construct. My thinking is the manufacturers making the complete systems make their own equipment and therefore the availability of certain components is only through the manufacturer of that specific component.
There are ways around reverse osmosis membrane filters, which essentially is the filter that removes extremly small particulate matter, bacteria being one of them, by utilizing micron stainers that get down to the single digits. The disolved metals and such are removed through the activated carbon portion. Simply filtering water through activated carbon, micron screening and then even the application of a UVC sterilizer will most certainly purify even the most turbid water for an aquarium.
I have used survival straws in some seriously nasty water and have been amazed how a simple device like that even made the water taste good. Making a micro water filter system isn't all that hard to accomplish, but doing it with proprietary components may make it way more complicated than it needs to be.

I love the DIY aspect myself, but hen RO units can be bought for $60, it really isn't worth the time and effort.

Thanks bold for your input! Pharaoh... Where are you finding them for $60? The cheapest I have found is still a hair over $100 and then you still have shipping. I have found canisters and filters for sale that are a decent price and without a membrane I can make a four stage for about the same money.
