So i went fishing last night and i found a piece of driftwood in the shallows and i was wondering if it would be safe to take it out, treat it somehow and safely put it in an aquarium without it bringing anything with it into the tank.

If so how would i treat a large piece of wood?

You can either bake it in the oven or find a large pot and boil the wood...

I took one out of the water, sun dried it, then put as hot of water as I could on it in my bath tub (large piece) and then added salt to the water. Been in my tank for months, and nothing bad has happened.

Most of the time you'll be fine putting the drift wood straight into your tank, especially if its been in the water for awhile. I've been doing this for 20 years and never had any issues. If the wood was dry then I usually soak it in a tub for a few weeks just to get some of the tannins out.
