is it safe to take off top trim?

on my 45 gallon tall i want to make a sump an remove the top trim... is this safe? is top trim for show or doesnt it really help alot in holding tank together?

If you remove it.. the tank seals will slowly pull apart...

If the tank has no center or corner bracing, make sure you bring several mops and towels to clean up the mess after you fill it up.

the op mentioned this tank was for a sump, perhaps the baffles will aid in the tanks overall support and thats if they use GLASS baffles.
