I wonder if there would be any way to have the collectors and or distributors bar code the tube that is put over the barb ? With the quotas that have been in place lately this could also be another way to track the rays export numbers. no bar code = no export and or a hefty fine. Understanding that these tubes fall of frequently and this would not be a perfect system. Now giving 2000 native collectors a gps unit would be cost prohibitive but they also know thier own sections of the different rivers like the back of thier hand and could pass this information on to the distributor or holding facility they deal with.
I personally wouldn't mind an extra $5 on the price of a wild caught to know at least the general area of collection.within say 1-5 miles. Or even the exact gps location.

Any thought or opinions ?

I posted this thd instead of derailing aquaman45's thd located here

1st thought, there may be some hybridization being done unknowingly. There are people that do purposely create hybrids, whether this is right or wrong should be a separate thread all together So please don't include that here but some sort of tracking system would be helpful to both sides of that fence.

2nd thought, we may be missing separate sub species or specific traits that could be tracked to tributaries or river systems. either way it would be easier to figure out sooner than later with some sort of collection tracking system.

If I was a stingray dist/collector, I wouldn't want to do this..

Reason being is lets say you pull some awesome looking ray from collection point A.. you barcode it, the buyer of the ray and ANYONE who see's that ray will know the collection point.. who is to say that another dist/collector won't then go to that collection point, and try to get more of that type and try to pull something shady on you?

In my opinion, and I know that some people will agree... if I like it, I will buy it.. regardless of its collection point, breeder, or generation.

Don't see it being possible.

I bet all they want down there is Americans in speedboats being navigated by TomToms to where Joe shmo pulled a nice naturally occurring hybrid that is mistakenly viewed as a prized sought after "pure" bred.

You give away locations you give away your job. The fisherman make thier money by being good at what they do. I'm sure there's people out there that are privellaged enough to know exactly where the fish are coming from, but we as hobbyists don't always seem to be so privellaged.

Random thoughts.....

We should be thankfull for what we get. No one HAS to sell these things to us. It's my understanding the US hasn't really been the top bidder in the fishworld. Seems other countries out there are ready to pay more and they don't even ask for pics let alone locations.

We should be happy they're being captive bred, as it seems with the price of everything going up then it's just a matter of time till everything has quotas and a pricetag 5 fold of what it is now. Black rays were first but what if it happens to all of them? Lets face it, the more populated it gets down there the less rays there's gonna be, less supply.......

I for one would like to know the general location or river from where the rays are coming from. I have a male Motoro Ray that apparently came from Brazil and has a very bright and distinctive dot pattern (black ring, orange ring and yellow center) that are 1/2"+ in diameter and lots of them - his body is a light brown color. I've been trying to find a female with the same spotting but have been unsuccessful. I found an importer that had one but someone beat me to her. The importer told me that the female ray was imported from Brazil from the Rio Tocantins river. Coincidence both rays have the same pattern or is it indicative of the rays from that River? Most motoro rays are imported from Peru as they are much cheaper. My point being if a person wants to breed a stain or morph of a species, it would be benificial to know the location it was caught to keep the strain pure. i for one would pay a bit extra to know and / or order more rays from that location.

I don't think the exact location has to advertised to everone or shared as public knowledge, but if the collectors kept records of where they caught the rays with some form of a tracking system, then it would make it alot easier to find specific rays down the road in case the actual collector was no longer able to collect rays or remember where he caught it. I know alot of these rivers are hundreds of miles long and colors / patterns of rays vary along the river - all the more reason to have accurate records.

With more rays being captive bred and hybridized along with the shrinking ray habitat, It could become very difficult down the road to keep pure strains. This mistake has been made repeatedly throughout history with all types of animals with the concequence of pure strains becoming extinct.

BTW - anyone keeping Motoros with the same pattern as mine?

Post a pic?

This is the Motoro pattern I'm looking for. The photo is of the female that was for sale that I missed buying. I've taken pictures of my male, but he always turns out darker in the picture that what he is. My male looks exactly like this female with a light colored body and the spots have a black ring, orange ring and a yellow center. His spots are large (1/2"+) on the main part of his body and fairly numerous. Most of his spots look like this except for around the edges where the yellow center is less visible. He is almost 3 years old and has only grown to 12" despite being well fed / cared for. The supplier that had the female told me that the Motoros from the Rio Tocantins didn't get as big as other Motoros.
