Is it true that canister filters cause hole in the head for cichlids and bio-wheel filters don't? I am using a canister filter for my oscar (without carbon) and the hole in the head doesn't seem to be healing. Could this be from the canister filter? I am using metro and feeding hikari cichlid gold and doing regular water changes with water conditioner and using aquarium salt with the water temp at 83 degrees for faster healing.

I always suspected as much.

OP I never heard that before. One thing that is good for HITH is add a vitamin block to the tank, extra vitamin C helps them fight it. Another thing is metro is only viable for about 8 hours so you might have do more than one treatment a day to kill it. Soak some food in the metro and feed it as well. An excelent source of vitamin C is red bell peper, you could feed some small pices a couple of times a week don't over do it.

Is your canister filter clean?

HITH comes from bad water quality. If you have extremely dirty filters that don't get regular maintenance, they could be contributing to poor water quality. All filters need regular maintenance.

I'd say it's a half-truth, but not because of the type of filter. It's more likely that some people only break their canisters down a few times a year and so they're probably full of sludge and uneaten food.

+1 - clean the dirty filter. :-)

Yes, Ryan is absolutly correct you must maintane your filters to keep them clean. This is true of any type of filter. If your filter is dirty your water quality will suffer.

I agree with Ryan and he pretty much summed it up. I will say this though... Only clean filters can help fight diseases. The less maintenance you do to your tank... The more the disease thrives and most people don't keep canister filters clean.

Agree with Ryan and the others that say, if you let your canister sit without cleaning out the gunk for a month, it could be a nitrate sink and stress creator that leads to HITH
