I'm planning on selling my Fahaka and converting my 55 gal tank to salt water. Is it worth it to do a 55 gal salt water....I just want to do live rock and fish no corals....how much live rock do i need? about 110 lbs....will that even fit (i'm not doing a sump tank under it)

Get a great skimmer, and all you would need is about 60 lbs of live rock... its standard to go roughly 1 lb a gallon, 2lb would be great tho!

hell yea its worth it for a SW 55, get some fuzzy dwarf lionfish...I saw a rare yellow one for 29$ i wish a SW setup!

Or you could set up a really nice reef in a 55G. good luck to you!

he said he doesn't want to do reef.
yellow tangs
dwarf angels
hawkfish
dwarf lions
filefish/tobys
smaller wrasses
and butterflyfish
are all good in a 55, but with the butterflys you should check the species info (i put them up there cause most are good in a 55.)

You could do a snowflake moray in a 55 as well. They only get around 3' or so and they are fantastic in captivity. I started out with a 55 SW and loved it so much I upgraded to a 125. Right now my 55 has an Undulated Triggerfish and a Snowflake Moray. My big boys are in my 125. They are quite the pair...no aggression what so ever...other than towards my filter intakes (which my trigger hates with a passion).

110 lbs seems about right...using the 1-1.5# per gallon rule. You will be able to fit that in there as long as you pay attention to the slope. That's the one tough thing with the 55 is that it is so narrow. Just really build a solid base and you should be all set. I made a crescent shape in my 55 (left the middle more open and stacked up into the corners) to give my trigger more swimming room and that way the moray has his own pile of rock to retreat to.

YEAH DUDE!!!! NO DOUBT DO IT!!!!!

55 saltys look awesome.

imo, i would not steup a 55 gal salt tank, within 6 months you will want a larger tank, then a larger tank, then a larger tank etc

sell the 55 and get a 125 or larger

i am not suggesting it because it won't work, because it will work and will be awesome, but trust me, if you don't want a reef you will want a larger tank for larger fish

i started with a 55 8 years ago, and within a year we changed to a 75 then a 100 then a 125, then a 390, and back down to a 240. the 390 broke:cry:

i can get my live rock for like 4 dollars a lbs canadian....i work at the Big Al'S shark aquarium...i'm looking to sell my fahaka puffer and with the money i make off of him i will buy a good skimmer and as much live rock as i can afford.

it is worth it to do any size s.w. as long as you enjoy it.

I agree. I have a twenty SW, and I think it's great.
