is it worth it to build a stand and 120ish gallon tank rather than buy one?

I'm tempted to give it a shot, I'm somewhat handy with tools and such, and from the look of it, I can build them for a fraction of the cost of buying prefab.

I live in a basement, on the same level as the garage/workshop, so the weight limit on the floor is no issue, but space is, it's not a big room, 4'Lx2'W is probably my limit. i'm debating over going 2'H for a 120gal ish tank, or 3'H for a 180gal ish, but i'm not totally sure.

any ideas on what is the most economical way to go, and what the easiest way to go is (assuming i'm building) would be much appreciated!

meanwhile, I'm going to continue oggling everyone's incredible setups! wow! glad i found this place!:headbang2

It all comes down to what is available used in your area and how bad you're Jonesing(is that a word ?) to build your own.
I recently bought a used 100 Truvu complete. By the time I was done the only thing I reused was the tank. I'm still in it a lot less than retail, but, I got just what I wanted.

If it is your first tank or you have limited expeience, buy someone else's setup.
Within a short time you will either be wanting to do a major overhaul or you'll sell it and be happy. Either way, Welcome. :D

ya its worth it if you are going custom and can get your raw material for a lot cheaper. Just remember to do the right calculations for glass thickness on something that is that tall.

Well its worth it for people who enjoy DIY...

Dollars and cents savings differ from project to project.
