Long time member, quit the hobby, and now a lurker. I've been to John's place where the SoCal meet was held a long time ago. Is the House of Sam still up? I found this video which was uploaded 2 years ago. It's the earliest accounting of the tank I can find aside from the 2008 and 2009 videos.

You're not the first to try and find info on that tank and JohnPTC. Nothing ever comes of it and no one seems to know anything or at least care to comment on it.

That tank looks like torture to me, not for the fish (though it is overstocked) but in terms of maintenance...each to their own though

This is the first ive heard of this tank but you think it would be unusual for someone as serious about fish keeping would shut down a tank like that but you never know everyone has their reasons...Those arapaimas are huge, one did look like it had an injury to mouth though.

shookONES shookONES said that he believed the house of Sam was no more, and I'm confident he knows more than I do.

This is actually an easy thing to resolve with technology nowadays but I value privacy and John was one of the most gracious individuals I've met.

One would expect that his son would've taken over the tank maintenance eventhough is financed by John.

About the overstocking, you should check out the tanks in Asia and the amount of filtration they use.

But man that tank was amazing...

You never know, that thing was expensive to maintain. Divorce could wreak something like that(not saying that's what happened).

hard to enjoy the hobby with all the maintence and expense;l I love my 50 gallon but then to each his or her own
Thats true, 5 hours every weekend just to do water changes gets old real quick. Im assuming that tank is/was on a drip and all he really had to do was clean the glass and feed which in my opinion, would be pretty fun.
