I'm wondering is it necessary for African cichlids tank to have light on for at least few hours a day? for their health wise? Or just for our own viewing...

While some they come from extreme depths, I think some light does benefit them. This could be as simple as ambient lighting in the room where the tanks are located.

I would feel bad about leaving my lights off for days on end in my basement dedicated fish room with no windows. On many of the tanks in there, I do not have lights over the tanks; they get enough lighting from the other tanks in the room.

yea,i only turn on when i'm home like 4 to 5 hrs per day max. Also when family and friends come over just to show off....:naughty: while also when i'm doing w/c

I rarely ever turn on the lights on my tanks. Well, the tanks that actually have lights that is. LOL

They get a bit of ambient light, but they do fine and breed like mad.

My 180 is in my living room were the tv and couches are so they get light from the windows and lights in the room until everyone goes to bed.
