Hey,

Some of you will know that I have asked about this behavior and noticed some different type of behavior from this fish that I have never witnessed in other fish. Its like clockwork. Give her some form of a cave or hide and this behavior comes out. Even if you bunch the plants together, she will dig out some substrate behind them and act the same way. The only way I can get her not to do this for the majority of the day is to remove all cover that she can hide around.

When I do this there is an issue with her being upset/moody/sulking whatever you want to call it. Her colors go dull ect.

I obviously don't want her hurting herself or the red hooks and it almost seems a little uncontrolled at times. I am pretty confident that a lot of the times she is doing very little damage to anything. But there is sometimes she will tag one of the SD's good enough to get some scales off or split a fin.

She hasn't been with this fish long and started doing this behavior before any new fish was in her aquarium. Its reaching almost 1 year since I acquired this fish at 1" ish. Maybe this is some teenage type behavior, maybe she will out grow it, or maybe she will go full chaotic and kill everything while hurting herself in a fit of rage.

What do you guys think of this?

We are moving to the new house last week april and shortly after I will be moving the fish to the final home which is probably going to be an 8 x 2 x 2 or something close to these dimensions. Maybe things will change at that point, obviously I will wait things out till then before doing anything to drastic.

Here is the video to see the behavior.

Seems like normal/typical territorial behaviour for a species known to be aggressive. Hence the trade name "Red Terror". Also, generally this is a riverine species that would hug the banks and use overhangs, caves, dead trees, etc to lay during non hunting periods, and like most larger aggro cichlids defending their territory would be a natural thing to do in the wild. Nothing crazy about it.

She might calm down in an 8ft tank, or she might just destroy everything in her path as she matures.

I have an ~8" male and he does this with the fake root nest i got for him, he usually never goes more that a foot away unless its feeding time, before I put the logs in hed sulk above one of the heaters.

The 3" female free swims, its pretty funny.

My female used to be fine being out and about all the time. Even with the provided caves. Recently she has been staying inside them more and more but definitely still uses the tank to swim around.

I kinda hope she outgrows this.
