He has been just laying on the bottom for the last two or three days. He still goes to the top and hangs out there on occasion too. But this laying on the bottom thing is new and concerns me.uploadfromtaptalk1352994934018.jpg

Has he been doing that during the day or night? I know at night they sleep on the bottom . When I feed mine he usually lays at the bottom for awhile I guess to digest lol maybe it's internal parasites? If he's eating normally I wouldn't worry to much

He kind of does it whenever he wants. We've had him for months, since he was about 5". He's a foot now and just now started this. He does still eat good though. Not as aggressive though. He could barely move an inch every couple of seconds trying to drag himself across the bottom chasing after a rosy last night....that wasn't normal at all.

You might also have better luck posting this question in the gar subforum, under ancient fish.

True, but, i figured that the behavior of a fish not a catfish or polypterus laying on the bottom would be odd in general. Not just odd for a gar. And if anyone else with any kind of fish that has done this has figured out what the cause and solution is I wouldn't discredit their findings just because it isnt a gar...know what I mean...

This behaviour is fairly common with gars. Not something to be overly concerned about.

This is exactly the aswere your tank looks like the width is adleast 2 foot and seems like he is rather crammed. I have the same problem, gars are lazy and do lay around alot you should have no worries. I find that the longer you have him the more active he will become.
