So I have no idea how to sex fish, not one. But Ive done some reading and while I had thought my two rams were both males, hence the chasing and whatnot while they were housed together, today Im not so sure. I went to check on my one guy whose tank I had just redone. New driftwood and plants and such. Well, the driftwood released tannins and my water is now tea colored. I did a water hardness test and the water was GREATLY softer than it had been. I noticed my ram's vent looked way bigger and more noticeable than before. Is my he a she? I read that their vents become more noticeable when they are ready to spawn, but Im not sure. "She" has also become more active, more round and more colorful.

Sorry these pictures arent very good!

The first is the tank, the second is my ?female?, the 3rd is my ?male?

The second picture is a female. The third pic could go either way. I think it looks female but sometimes it takes males a while to fill out. My male has much longer lyre-like extensions on his caudal fin and is much more colorful than my two females.

There are other aspects of the picture that appear to be male (the different breeding tube, the flatter, thinner abdomen area which is usually more plump in females, etc.) but sometimes my females appear this way when they're not in spawning mode. It's really hard to be certain from the pictures.

Ryan, the fish in the last photo DOES have the extensions on his caudal fin, just can't see it in the photo. His tail also has these extensions, whereas my female does not have any.

Im kind of excited that I somehow got a pair, but now, I'm wondering if I should try to reintroduce them and how I should go about it. Tips?
