hey my pleco looks like he has a hard skin covering some part of him, i think he is a common pleco
in the pic the effected skin is lighter

Can't tell from the picture. The colors are a fairly common in many hypostomus species.
 
They wil also look like that if your water quality is poor. I would check (or get it checked) your water for high nitrates. Nitrates over 40ppm can cause them to look like that. Of course, any reading for ammonia and nitrite can too, but I don't want to offer info that may already be known:)
 
Agree with all of aboves. Plecs can change their colour due to the stress factors mentioned, and they have these different hues. Sometimes they keep them, i have fish that have it all the time, and it can also just be a mood thing.

But check the above and let it settle.
 
i believe ur pleco is a L164, looks much like a gibby but with the stripes. i have one also and it constantly looks like that and my water is great. awesome pleco but quite aggresive at times.
