I noticed my aro has been chasing his tankmates lately but he's showing particular dislike towards my rtgg. I'm observing my rtgg because he is acting submissive. He just stays in one corner when the lights are on and moves around when dark. He still eats but has what appears to be bite marks on his right side, not deep but missing scales. I have another tank on standby for him just in case. Aro is approx. 22" and rtgg 10". They've been together for 8 months now.. Tank size is 6.5' L x 3' W x 2' D. Is this behavior normal for silver aros? Thanks.

Mine did the same thing as he got larger most of them do. It always seems like mine picks one fish he dont like and goes after it. He settelwd down after i put my bad 16" lmb with him for a few months the bass showed him whos boss and never hurt him. Bass im in my outdoor pond now. He is still acting pretty dosile towards his tankmates now. Also found planting the tank well helped a little. What size tank are they currently? Cant remember if you mentioned any but are there other tankmates?

Tank is 280g. Tankmates are 6 SDs, 3 oscars, 3 balas, 2 sens, 2 ornates, 1 scat, 1 ck, 1 sev. I think I have enough dithers but as you said they seem to zero in on 1 fish they don't like.

Is your rtgg bigger than your oscars? Im just wondering if he is going after him cause hes the largest and seen as the biggest threat. Cause ive found mine will mainly go after the largest fish, if that fish stands up to him he will generally leave it alone over time cause he seems to figure out its not worth his time. Mine is about 25"-26" and in a little smaller tank than yours about 210 gallon, until I do my indoor pond later this summer. Hes with a giraffe catfish, lugabris pike, and my mala wolf fish. He used to hate my pike and my pike always hid now my pike stands his ground, and he doesnt get messed with. I would say for the time being just make shure your rtgg has a place to retreat. Give it some time as long as he is able to eat and not getting beat on too bad it may work itself out.

wow, i have a very similar setup as you but i have had it up and runing for about a year. My RTGG is about 12 inches and Silver Aro is about 24 inches and those are the only two fish that ever really fight.

a few months ago the RTGG started acting submissive and hiding in a corner near the bottom with some driftwood. I saw very minor damage but nothing to be too worried about and just monitored their behavior. I also noticed when the gourami went toward the bottom of the tank the aro never followed him.

For whatever reason this last month or so the RTGG started standing up for himself again and now they seem to be pretty even. I think the gourami grew faster then the aro this last month and visably looks wider.

I think the aro and the gourami get into it the most because they both like to hang out near the surface a lot where everything else in my tank stays near the bottom or hides most of the time.

i dont know how it will turn out in the long run, but i never saw enough to rehome any fish and now they seem to be evenly matched again. i think with any agressive setup, you just need to be ready to move some fish around if their lives depend on it.

@1bigdovii The rtgg is bigger than the oscars. He's the biggest next to the aro so yeah that could be the reason the aro sees him as a threat. Hopefully one day the rtgg will do some karate kid stuff to make it more competitive...lol.
@Nim Dibbley we have a very similar situation. When my rtgg goes into a corner the aro doesn't follow. Nothing serious for now just a nip here and there so I'll leave it as it is and see what happens. Appreciate your input guys. :)
